The Chaplaincy Clarion

The new Chaplain

Paul Vrolijk, a Parish Curate presently ministering at Christ the King (Bradley Stoke, Bristol), has been appointed as the next Chaplain of Aquitaine.

Paul was nominated for appointment to the Bishop by Intercontinental Church Society (ICS), the Anglican mission agency and patronage society, who have been recruiting Aquitaine's chaplains since the nineteenth century and with whom the chaplaincy shares a common concern for English-speakers living in countries where English is not the main language. Paul will be a mission partner of ICS.

Paul is 44 years old, a Dutch national with wife Janine and three children, twin daughters Davita and Hannah and son Boaz. Paul will take up his new post on 1st January 2009 and is looking to live in the Bergerac area of Aquitaine.

Paul has experienced a breadth of cultures, life in countries on several continents, contrasting types of church and varieties of churchmanship. It was in 1998 that he felt a strong call to give up his job in the international Oil & Gas industry (based in Singapore) and to ‘retool’ for a preaching ministry. During his ministry training he gained experience in two ICS Chaplaincies in the Netherlands.

Paul says ‘It would be my desire to build on the rich diversity of ministries in Aquitaine and to work closely together with the team and the various congregations to lead and equip the church for whatever the Lord has in store.’

Biographical Details:

Born in 1964 in The Hague, Paul studied at Delft University of Technology (MSc Applied Physics) and Trinity College, Bristol (BA Hons and a recently finished PhD).

He trained for ordination at Trinity College, Bristol and was ordained in 2004, and priested in 2005.

Prior to his ordination training Paul was General Manager for a high-tech software and consultancy company serving the Oil and Gas industry of the Middle and Far East, based in Singapore, and managing a diverse team of highly capable individuals who were based in 5 different countries.

His hobbies and interests include spending time with his family, music, literature, cycling, walking, tennis, golf and especially gardening.

My guest in October will be Madge Olby who has worked with ICS (Intercontinental Church Society) on the Council for many years and she will be talking to us about the work of ICS

ICS enables the planting and growth of English-speaking international Anglican churches/chaplainces in countries where English is not the first language, and conducts outreach to tourists. ICS is also a patronage society, so nominates ministers for numerous Anglican churches abroad and owns many church buildings. Website: www.ics-uk.org

Training Courses

It is proposed to hold a number of training courses for those interested in taking a more fulfilling role in leading our worship.  The Wardens and Caroline Gordon-Walker will be happy to hear from anyone interested on carolinegw@wanadoo.fr.

Equally, Alpha courses are under way in the Lot et Garonne. These courses provide a fifteen session introduction to the Christian faith.  Each session consists of a video presentation followed by a group discussion and a meal in a friendly atmosphere in someone's home.

More details of the Messiah,   13 December 2008.

The following letter from Veronica Dare-Bryan provides more details of the performance. Please read this if you are taking part or would like to take part.

“Dear Everyone

Here are some initial details for those who do not already have them:

1.  We are using Novello  Watkins Shaw edition.  Should anyone have a copy of Novello Prout edition that will serve as well.  Copies can  be obtained from www.musicroom.com .

2.  Personal practising can take place by using the synthesized web site . http://www.cyberbass.com/Major_Works/Handel_GF/Handel_Messiah.htm

If you right click on the particular part you want to save you will get a choice, pick "save link as" left click on that then decide where to save it, the default is desktop and then click save. You can left click and hear the part immediately if you don't want to download it. You can also purchase the suitable voice CD from www.musicdynamics.com , their Choraline editiion.

3.  The Running order is attached.Messiahrunningorder

4.  Initial and draft timetable:  The Soloists will rehearse with John on Thursday, the orchestra only will rehearse on Friday evening (many members teach).   Choir only practise will begin on 10.00 a.m on Saturday 13 December at the Church, Eglise St Etienne de la Cite, in the centre of Perigueux.  A map will be attached to the final detailed e-mail.  Parking is available free nearby, 50 metres to the west, or underground, paying but also nearby.    Bring packed lunch and several thermos´of hot drinks and wear thermal underwear!  After lunch (14.30) the choir will rehearse with orchestra and soloists.  At 17.30 - 18.00  there will be a supper prepared of hot soup, pate etc.  The costs will be about 7 euros. (details to be confirmed).  All toilet and eating arrangements are in the College St Marthe on the north side of the church, with grateful thanks to Mademoiselle Gros, La Directrice, and the Sisters.

It's a good idea to bring a cushion.

5.  The paying public will arrive by 19.30.  All our revenue will be donated to Emmaus and to World Vision´s development project in Armenia.

6.  Dress code for the choir: ladies in white tops and black bottoms, men black sweaters and black trousers. For the orchestra: men to be decided by asking for preference by players and ladies all black.

7.  If people from a distance need a bed overnight, please ask.  Several kind folk have offered.

8. DO choral participants have fancy score holders, perhaps with initials or symbol of their own choir?  It is suggested these might  be used to show how many choir members from diverse places have come together to  sing the Messiah.  CAN you let me know please.

9.  On October 29th John Jenkins will be rehearsing with Variations choir at St Martin de Riberac, Salle de Fêtes at 19.30.  If there ae those who would like to benefit from this opportunity, please turn up, preferably advising me before hand but not essential!

I will be asking for a confirmation nearer the time of participation in the choir, a reconfirmation of what voice you sing and, for those who are kindly coordinating for several others, I will ask for a comprehensive list of all those in their group, again with relevant singing details.  We hope to publish all names in the programme (albeit in rather small print)

Any queries-  I am at the end of a telephone (05 53 04 92 00) or on this e-mail address,  veronica.dare-bryan@neuf.fr      I shall be away from 13th to 17th October.

Thank you all for your enthusiasm and support.

Veronica   Dare-Bryan”
