The
Chaplain
‘Jesus’
People’. As a
result of the well supported Lent Course, led by Tony Mullen, this
format of informal fortnightly meetings will continue with a study of
Acts. For more information about times and venues, please contact
Tony on 05 53 79 60 66.
The
Coffee Morning organised
by Brian Hogarth on 24th June in aid of Shelter Box, raised 400
Euros. Many thanks to Ray Dunn for his most informative presentation
about the charity, and to all those who provided the delicious
refreshments. It was rewarding to see the difference this charity has
made to those suffering from the recent disaster in Haiti and from
similar tragedies elsewhere in the world.
The
annual Monteton Summer Barbecue at
the home of Helen and Jim Rice on 16th July , raised just over 1,000
euros for Chaplaincy funds. We were delighted that the Maire of
Cambes and his wife, M.and Mme Raphalen, were able to join us for un
verre d’amitie. The
Maire not only loaned the chairs and tables for the event but also
delivered and collected them! We enjoyed wine from the Bergerac
vineyard of George and Elizabeth Vellacott plus a wonderful array of
food organised by Jan Winser and her team, whilst being serenaded by
Anne Bishop and her ensemble. Warmest thanks go to Helen and Jim for
allowing us to make use of such a beautiful venue, for all their hard
work and for that of everyone before, during and after this most
successful event!
The
Tiptree Singers from
Essex will be giving a concert at Monteton in the Autumn, and
accommodation is needed for some choir members. The dates are
27-29th October. If you can help with this, please contact Leslie
Eckett on
05 53 93 53 86 or leslie.eckett@wanadoo.fr
A
celebration mass for
Pere Roger for the 40th anniversary of his priesthood, and who leaves
Miramont for parishes in Nerac in September, was held in Miramont
church on Sunday 4th July. A delegation from our congregation at
Monteton presented him with a framed painting of Monteton church,
together with a card signed by over 50 members. After the service,
our Chaplain, Paul, and Brian Scrivener, Lay Reader Emeritus who has
liaised with Pere Roger over the years, were invited to the lunch
attended by the Roman Catholic Bishop.

you have ordered a copy it can be obtained at the back of the church
after a service.
Please
note instructions
from the Mairie in Monteton that during the months of June, July and
August, we must not drive through the village to park by the church.
Parking is restricted to the designated areas beside the Salle des
Fetes at the entry to the village. If there are disability or
delivery problems, please contact one of the Wardens who will advise
on special arrangements agreed with the Mairie.
Church
Banner.
A particular thank you to Norma Eckett for the magnificent textile
church banner she has produced from ‘bricks’ contributed by
members of the Lot et Garonne congregations, and which will hang in
rotation in each of the churches.
Advance
notice of the Monteton Harvest Supper, which
will be held on Friday 17th September at 7.00pm in the Salle des
Fetes and which will include an Auction of Promises. The cost of a
ticket will be 12.50 euros, including food and wine, (but bring your
own couverts
).
These will be on sale soon and places will be limited to 80. Proceeds
to go to Chaplaincy funds.
Gift
of the Revd. John Brown’s ‘Self- Interpreting Bible’. A
version of this famous bible has been given for use in the church at
Monteton by Edith Finlay (nee Callan). Members of her family are
recorded in the Family Register section: Garnet George Callan, born
1883, was her grandfather and Minnie Winifred Callan,(Cis), was a
much-loved great aunt who never married because her fiancé was
killed in the First World War. The bible was first published in 1778;
our beautifully illustrated version in the mid-19th century. John
Brown was a self-educated shepherd boy who learned Greek, Latin and
Hebrew and was ordained minister at Haddington, East Lothian, in
1751. He also published ‘The Dictionary of the Bible’ and a
‘History of the Christian Church’. In the preface to his
bible,
he encourages us ‘to labour in much prayer and supplication of
the
Holy Ghost (who perfectly understands them...) that he may
effectively interpret them and apply them to our heart’.
